The Whole Language: The Power of Extravagant Tenderness
Week 4: Chapters 9 and Epilogue
Question 1
Please introduce yourself.
Question 2
“The tender glance that “reaches back” is the revelation at Homeboy. The homies find the courage of their own tenderness. It creates a passageway that enables attachment repair. It restores a sense of security and mutual trust. Perhaps for the first time, resting in tenderness, the homies need not be defended, nor arm themselves for protection.” P. 172
What does the word tender mean to you? What images or feelings come to mind when you think about the word tender? What does it mean to be tender to yourself or to others?
Question 3
“This time of COVID really aggravated the monkey mind; the anxious, always judging mind. Only tenderness seems to tame it. And then we are simply never invited to fear, panic, terror, or to embrace conspiracy theories. God does not invite us to check out QAnon. We are beckoned to joy. Even though we are often
caught in the belief that happiness should take a particular form. Certainly, the worst things can happen, but indeed they become transformational when tender joy is chosen in the moment. In good times and in bad; in virus or in vigor.” P. 176
What was a time in which the Lord invited you to choose tender joy at any point in the pandemic? What came of this choice? In what ways was isolation harmful and how is community healing?
Question 4
Who is the hardest person for you to love? For you, why might the title “Unmute yourself” be significant?
